Sphynx cat care
Is a Sphynx Cat Right for You?
Sphynx cats are impossibly charming — velcro-soft, dog-like in their devotion, endlessly entertaining. It is easy to fall in love with the idea. But as someone who actually lives with one, the kindest thing I can do is hand you an honest checklist before you fall all the way.
A Sphynx might be right for you if…
- You want a cat that is genuinely affectionate — they follow you, sit on you, sleep under the covers with you.
- You are home a fair amount; they crave company and can struggle when left alone too long.
- You do not mind a maintenance routine: regular baths, ear cleaning, warmth, and skin care.
- You can budget for the food, heating, supplies and vet care a hairless cat needs.
A Sphynx might NOT be right for you if…
- You wanted a low-maintenance, independent cat. (This is the opposite of that.)
- You are out of the house long hours most days.
- A tight budget would make the ongoing costs a source of stress.
- You expected "hairless" to mean "no allergies" or "no mess" — neither is true.
The honest heart of it
A Sphynx is not a harder cat — it is a different cat, with needs that are upfront and constant rather than hidden. Owners who know what they are signing up for adore them. Owners who were surprised by the reality are the ones who struggle.
This checklist is the short version. The full, honest picture — so you can decide with your eyes open and then thrive together — is exactly what I wrote the guide for.
