Are Sphynx Cats Hypoallergenic? The Honest Answer
It is the first question almost every would-be Sphynx owner asks, usually with their fingers crossed: are Sphynx cats hypoallergenic? As someone who lives with one, I owe you the honest answer — and it is not the one the internet wants to give you.
No cat is truly hypoallergenic — including the Sphynx
Here is the part that surprises people: most cat allergies are not caused by fur. They are caused by a protein called Fel d 1, found in cat saliva, skin, and oil glands. Sphynx cats have all of those. In fact, because they have no coat to absorb the oils their skin produces, that protein can sit right on their bare skin and spread onto everything they touch.
So why do some allergy sufferers do better with a Sphynx?
- There is no shedding fur carrying allergens around your home and into the air.
- Because owners bathe Sphynx cats regularly (a must for their skin), the surface allergens get washed away often.
- Less fur on furniture and clothes means fewer allergens accumulating.
For some mildly allergic people, that combination genuinely makes a Sphynx more liveable. For others, the Fel d 1 is still more than enough to set off symptoms.
Before you commit
If allergies are your reason for choosing a Sphynx, do not buy first and hope. Spend real time around one before bringing one home — ideally more than once. It is the only honest test.
The allergy question is just one of many things people wish they had known before getting a Sphynx. The full, honest picture — skin, cost, cold, health and all — is what I wrote the guide for.
